Hot Buttered Rum in a Slow Cooker

  • 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 6 whole cloves
  • Less than 1/4 tsp. ground cardamom
  • 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 2 cups dark or spiced rum


  1. Put everything but rum into the slow cooker
  2. Add 2 quarts hot water
  3. Stir well, cover pot
  4. Set on slow cooker to low, and let cook for 5 hours
  5. Once done, add rum and stir well (rum can also be added to each individual's mug instead, for their own taste)
  6. Top with whipped cream, add a cinnamon stick, and sprinkle with nutmeg
  7. Tip:
    This makes an excellent drink for a party, if made in a larger slow cooker. Turn the temperature to warm after making it, and allow the guests to add the rum to their own mug instead of adding it to the pot.
